The UK rail industry has unveiled a new sustainability reporting platform, designed to simplify and enhance the collection and reporting of crucial environmental data. The “Sustainable Insights Reporting Tool” aims to provide a unified and efficient system for rail firms to track and report their sustainability performance.
The new platform will enable participating rail companies to submit detailed data aligned with the Sustainable Rail Blueprint, the industry’s roadmap for environmental improvement. The tool is expected to generate actionable insights that will benefit the entire rail sector, supporting sustainable development and fostering collaboration.
Thom Rawson, RSSB Sustainable Rail Principle said: “The Reporting Tool, developed with input from the rail industry, replaces and improves on the existing Sustainability Tool. It is designed to meet usability, functionality, and collaborative needs.
“This reporting tool marks the initial step in the broader Sustainable Insights toolkit, which aims to provide the rail sector with actionable insights to inform sustainability strategies, decisions and actions.”
The launch of the reporting tool is part of a wider initiative to improve data collection and analysis within the rail industry. RSSB is also developing a Data Hub, scheduled for release in 2025-26, which will serve as the next component of the Sustainable Insights toolkit.
The Data Hub will utilise information submitted through the reporting tool, along with data from other sources, to create custom data visualisations and analyses. This will empower individual rail firms to monitor and report their sustainability data effectively, while also informing industry-wide sustainability strategies based on emerging trends.
The introduction of these tools is expected to significantly streamline the reporting process, providing the rail industry with the data needed to drive sustainable practices and meet environmental targets.
