The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has released findings suggesting that Eurostar’s London depot at Temple Mills International has the potential to accommodate additional train services. This comes after an independent report, commissioned by the ORR, assessed the depot’s capacity.
The report, published today, indicates that while extra capacity exists, adjustments to operational and maintenance procedures, alongside potential infrastructure modifications, would be necessary to facilitate the stabling and maintenance of more trains.
The ORR initiated the investigation following increased interest in expanding rail services between St Pancras and continental Europe. Industry figures have highlighted access to a suitable depot near London for maintenance and storage as a crucial prerequisite for new operators to enter the route.
“Our independent report indicates that there is potential for increased capacity at the Temple Mills International depot,” stated an ORR spokesperson. “However, realising this potential will require changes to existing operational arrangements and possible infrastructure alterations.”
In a move to ensure transparency and gather comprehensive evidence, the ORR is now inviting stakeholders to contribute information that could either support or challenge the report’s initial conclusions.
Stakeholders have until 28th April to submit their evidence. Following this, the ORR will review all submissions and publish its final conclusions.
The ORR’s findings are expected to play a significant role in shaping future decisions regarding the expansion of rail services between London and mainland Europe, potentially opening the door for increased competition and improved connectivity.
